An experimental Super-8 film transfered to 16mm, video, DVD. It behaves like a map or a scale drawing of the country of Canada. At the same time it is shot from a frieght train one of the most important historical icons of the country.
I love this! I listened to your artist talk online from when you were at the Owen's Art Gallery in Sackville. I am in a class where we have to design a program for the museum, and it has to have a connection to the Owen's. I understand your work does not revolve around white settler and Indigenous relationships, however I am enticed by this piece as it reflects the spooky daunting corruption of the railways and their impact on the land and Indigenous peoples, and through your speaking as well I see a great amount of awareness. I am a white woman, with a lot of anger, shame, guilt and sadness revolving around my settler ancestry and Canada's history and ongoing colonization and racism. I want to do something about it, but I fear it is not my place, and I want to steer fully away from notions of tokenization, white saviorism, exploitation and virtue signaling. Anyways haha, I am using this piece as a starting point, as you are a white male speaking and touching on Canada's nasty history. If you have any ideas, thoughts, comments, I would love to hear from you! Thanks so much. (bmartin@mta.ca) Brookie
